Yes, obtaining a permit is often required when eloping in Big Sur, especially if you’re considering a ceremony in state parks or on public lands. The California Department of Parks and Recreation oversees these areas and mandates permits to ensure the preservation of natural resources and to manage visitor use.
Note: Processing times can vary, so it’s advisable to apply well in advance of your planned date. Also, make note that some of the state parks offer different permits. You may be allowed to just obtain an elopement permit IF you’re having less than 10 people, including wedding party, officiant, witnesses, guests and children, any vendors (including your photographer- aka me). Additionally, I can act as a witness if needed! If you have more than 10 people, you will have to get a special events permit.
Finally, when planning, keep in mind that Big Sur only allows elopement permits at Andrew Molera State Park, Julia Pfeiffer Burns State Park, and Pfeiffer Big Sur State Park. Elopement permits aren’t available for Point Sur State Historic Park. Some Parks also only allow your event to be on certain days of the week as well, so make sure to keep this in mind when planning your Big Sur Elopement.
