What even is an Elopement (And Is It Right for You?)

Elopements have evolved beyond the old idea of running off to get married in secret. Now, eloping is all about crafting a wedding day that feels like YOU. No pressure, no huge guest lists, just an intimate, intentional day. If a big wedding doesn’t feel right, and you’d rather focus on each other instead of the expectations of a traditional wedding, eloping might be the perfect fit.

How to Legally Get Married in Wisconsin | How to Elope in Wisconsin with No Regrets

1. Self-Solemnization in Wisconsin: Can You Marry Yourselves?

Technically yes Wisconsin does allows self-solemnization, which means you don’t need an officiant to make it legal. You can marry yourselves, making your ceremony even more personal. But, couples may only self marry in cases where one of the marrying parties (or both) belong to a religious society, denomination, or sect that has customs, rules, or regulations on self solemnization. The word of the applicant is normally sufficient enough and proof is not required. However, some county clerks might have different requirements, so it’s best to double-check with the specific county where you’re applying.

You can read more about Wisconsin self marriages here on page 23.

2. Do You Need Witnesses?

In Wisconsin, you will need witnesses, even if you self-solemnize, witnesses are still required! Pro tip: your photographer (that’s me!) and if I have an assistant with me we can both sign as witnesses if needed.

3. How to Get Your Marriage License to Elope in Wisconsin

  • Apply in the county where either of you resides (or where you’ll be eloping if you’re from out of town)
  • Provide proof of identification and residence
  • Review and sign marriage license application
  • Pick up marriage license worksheet
  • The license is valid for 60 days.
